Kolkata: Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata has banned public access to the historic Gauripur Jama Masjid, also known as the Bankra Mosque, amid concerns over religious practices and security. But the move has been defended by authorities, who say national security and operational concerns have led to the decision to place this mosque inside an airport building.

The mosque, which is believed to be roughly 136 years old, is situated near the airport's secondary runway, an area that is highly sensitive from a security standpoint. Until recently, the mosque was only accessible to residents and worshippers with special entry passes for prayers. Despite the passage of time, airport officials have stopped providing passes indefinitely, effectively barring public access to the site.

The BJP leader and Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari expressed his agreement with the decision, stressing that security considerations should be given priority. According to him, airports are essential infrastructure facilities that cannot be used for unrestricted public movement in sensitive areas. The restriction is a precautionary measure to enhance airport security, rather than hinder religious activities, according to authorities. The structure's location near the runway is causing operational difficulties, which officials claim could hinder future development projects. The proposed change is intended to accommodate airport expansion without obstructing the availability of a suitable space for worshippers.

Certain segments of the population have expressed disapproval of this action. Despite the absence of security concerns, Siddurgah Chowdhury, a former MLA of the Trinamool Congress, expressed his belief that such restrictions were justified. His position was that officials needed to consider other options to maintain access to the historic site while meeting safety standards.

According to airport officials, security measures are becoming more stringent due to the growth of passenger traffic and new infrastructure. They emphasize that the management of operational areas is crucial for protecting travellers, airport staff and aviation facilities. The Gauripur Jama Masjid is not just a religious landmark for many in the vicinity.
