IIE DIGITAL: Argentina’s deputy consul in Mumbai Ezequiel Chabay experienced a special connection with Kolkata during his country’s World Cup semi final match, as thousands of fans turned a city park into a celebration of Argentine football.
Chabay watched the match with around 4,000 passionate supporters at a Jadavpur park, where Argentina flags, chants of “Messi, Messi” and the excitement of fans created an atmosphere that reminded him of home.
The 36 year old diplomat, who is on his first holiday trip to India, said Kolkata’s love for Argentina made him feel that his country was much closer than the 15,000 km distance suggests.
He said the sight of families, students and football lovers cheering together showed why Kolkata is often considered the second home of Argentine football. For him, the bond was not just about a match but about shared emotions, memories and admiration for the sport.
Chabay recalled the legacy of Diego Maradona and Argentina’s famous 1986 World Cup journey while describing the special relationship between Indian fans and Argentine football. He praised Kolkata supporters for keeping their faith in the team even during challenging moments of the match.
The diplomat also spoke highly of Lionel Messi, describing him as a symbol of dedication, resilience and the power of determination. He said Messi’s journey is an inspiration for young people beyond the world of football.
Reflecting on Argentina’s difficult moments in the 2022 World Cup, Chabay said the trust shown by Kolkata fans reminded him of the faith Argentine supporters have in their national team.
Having arrived in India five months ago, Chabay said Kolkata has impressed him with its history, culture and unmatched football passion. He also expressed his desire to attend the famous Kolkata Derby in the future and experience the city’s football spirit even more closely.
