IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Kolkata, June 19: The Trinamool Congress is reportedly facing a severe political crisis following what is being described as a major setback in the Lok Sabha, after earlier electoral reverses in the state assembly. With a large section of MPs allegedly distancing themselves from the party leadership under Sudeep Bandyopadhyay and Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, the Mamata Banerjee-led organisation is said to be under unprecedented pressure.

Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee flew to Delhi on Friday afternoon on an urgent visit. According to party sources, he is scheduled to meet Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla later in the day. A detailed discussion is expected on the current situation within the party in the Lok Sabha and the alleged shifting of allegiance by several MPs.

The party claim that the organisational fragmentation began after the assembly election defeat, with further political instability emerging in the Lok Sabha. Reports suggest that a group of around 20 MPs, including names such as Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Sudeep Bandyopadhyay, Shatabdi Roy, Dev, and Sayani Ghosh, have allegedly left Trinamool Congress and joined another political formation referred to as NCPI.

It is further reported that these MPs had recently met the Lok Sabha Speaker and submitted a letter formally communicating their decision, along with a request for recognition of a separate grouping in Parliament and allocation of separate seating arrangements.

The development has reportedly caused significant unease within the party leadership in Kolkata. Earlier, Abhishek Banerjee had already written to the Speaker through MPs Kirti Azad and Sagarika Ghose, asserting that the “real Trinamool” continues to retain organisational control despite the defections. The letter also maintained that the core structure of the party remains intact under the Kalighat leadership.

Political analysts believe that the alleged mass defection of 20 MPs and the demand for a separate parliamentary bloc has significantly increased pressure on both Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee. The evolving situation is now being closely watched as it could have major implications under anti-defection provisions and parliamentary recognition rules.

The Speaker’s decision is expected to play a crucial role in determining the future course of this political dispute. To safeguard its position legally and politically, Abhishek Banerjee is personally meeting the Speaker, as per political observers. Whether the high-level meeting leads to any resolution or further escalation remains to be seen.
