IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Kolkata, June 4: Fresh controversy has erupted in West Bengal politics after Rajya Sabha MP Babul Supriyo publicly criticised Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee through a lengthy social media post. In his remarks, the Trinamool Congress leader suggested that stronger action should have been taken against corruption during Mamata Banerjee’s tenure, arguing that the lack of strict measures allowed certain leaders within the party to engage in corruption and misuse of public funds.
Facebook post published on Wednesday night, Babul Supriyo wrote that those involved in corruption, embezzlement of government funds, and various criminal activities should have faced severe consequences after Mamata Banerjee came to power. According to him, failing to take such strict action was a significant mistake, and many of those individuals are now allegedly part of a controversial list of party leaders facing scrutiny.
Referring to the ongoing political developments within the party, Babul stated that anyone has the democratic right to take a position against their own political organisation. However, he added that if someone chooses to oppose the party's leadership and ideology, they should also consider stepping down from positions such as Member of Parliament or Member of the Legislative Assembly, since they were elected under the party’s symbol, leadership, and banner.
The Trinamool MP also took an indirect swipe at party colleague Ritabrata Banerjee. Reiterating his criticism regarding corruption, he claimed that several individuals who allegedly benefited from corruption or misappropriation of public money are now facing political isolation, electoral defeat, or legal consequences.
The sharpest remarks in the post, Babul Supriyo wrote that one particular individual had surprised him the most, comparing that person to “a snake moving among people in human disguise.” He further expressed hope that the Bharatiya Janata Party would not make the mistake of inducting such individuals into its ranks, as he claimed had happened in several other states.
Despite the strong comments, Babul Supriyo clarified that the views expressed in the social media post were entirely his personal opinions and should not be interpreted as the official position of the Trinamool Congress.
The post has generated significant discussion in political circles, adding to ongoing debates and tensions within the state's political landscape.
