IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Kolkata, May 30: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) visited the Sukia Street residence of Trinamool Congress leader and Beliaghata MLA Kunal Ghosh on Saturday in connection with the ongoing investigation into the alleged signature forgery case linked to the West Bengal Assembly.
The development comes shortly after CID officials also visited the residence and office of Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, intensifying the probe into the controversial matter involving alleged forged signatures in an Assembly-related nomination and support letter.
The investigation is centred around a disputed letter submitted to the Assembly regarding the nomination for the post of Leader of Opposition. According to party sources, a proposal was submitted on May 6 by the Trinamool Congress recommending Shovan Chattopadhyay for the post. The letter was reportedly signed by Abhishek Banerjee and supported by signatures of 70 MLAs.
However, scrutiny by the Assembly secretariat reportedly raised doubts over the authenticity of several signatures. Questions emerged over whether all the signatures were personally signed by the concerned MLAs, or if some were allegedly forged.
The suspicion, the Assembly Secretariat lodged a formal complaint at the Hare Street police station, after which the case was handed over to the CID for investigation.
CID teams have been visiting residences of several MLAs, including Nayna Bandyopadhyay, Kunal Ghosh, Baharul Islam, Chandranath Sinha, and Tapas Saha, to verify signatures and gather statements. It was also noted that some of the legislators whose signatures appeared on the document were reportedly not present in the Assembly on the stated date, further deepening the controversy.
Earlier in the day, CID officials also reached Abhishek Banerjee’s residence on Harish Mukherjee Road and his office on Kalighat Road, where he reportedly received an official notice and has been summoned to Bhawani Bhavan for questioning.
The escalating political developments, Kunal Ghosh stated in media interactions that he would fully cooperate with the investigating agency and answer all questions posed during the inquiry.
