IIE DIGITAL DESK : Madhyamgram, West Bengal, May 7, 2026: Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has alleged that the killing of his close aide Chandranath Rath was a “pre-planned, cold-blooded murder” carried out with clear intent and prior reconnaissance, while appealing to party workers to maintain peace and not take the law into their own hands.

Speaking after reaching the hospital in Madhyamgram where Rath was taken following the attack, Adhikari stated that the assassination appeared to have been carefully orchestrated. According to him, there are indications that the attackers had conducted surveillance for two to three days before executing the shooting. However, he clarified that while he suspects a political motive, he is not making definitive claims at this stage and is leaving the matter to the ongoing police investigation.

Adhikari said he has already spoken to the state’s Director General of Police and expressed confidence that the investigation would be carried out properly. He also urged BJP supporters across the state to remain calm and avoid retaliatory actions, emphasizing that no one should resort to violence or disrupt public order.

He further claimed that in the last few days, BJP workers have been attacked in multiple locations including Khardah, Baranagar, and Basirhat, describing the situation as part of a broader pattern of post-poll violence. Adhikari asserted that a future BJP government would ensure accountability in such cases within the next few days, drawing parallels with other high-profile cases where he alleges justice was delayed. He also announced that the party would take responsibility for the medical treatment of the injured and support the family of the deceased.

The incident took place on Wednesday night in Madhyamgram’s Doharia area, where Chandranath Rath, Adhikari’s personal assistant and aide, was shot multiple times while returning home. According to police sources, two unidentified men on a motorcycle intercepted his vehicle and opened fire at close range before fleeing the scene. Rath sustained critical injuries to his chest, abdomen, and head, and was declared dead upon arrival at a private hospital. The vehicle driver was also injured and is undergoing treatment in Kolkata.

Police have confirmed that the attackers used a motorcycle without a visible number plate, and preliminary investigation suggests possible use of a fake registration identity. CCTV footage from surrounding areas is being examined, and forensic teams have recovered shell casings from the crime scene.

The killing has triggered strong political reactions across West Bengal, with BJP leaders alleging targeted political violence, while opposition parties have condemned the incident and called for a transparent investigation. The Trinamool Congress has demanded an impartial probe under judicial supervision or by the Central Bureau of Investigation, rejecting allegations of political involvement.

As tensions rise in several districts amid reports of post-election violence, security has been tightened across sensitive areas. Police officials have urged restraint while assuring that all angles, including political motive, are being thoroughly investigated.
