Kolkata: The son of a former Trinamool Congress councillor, Samrat Mukherjee has been arrested by Kolkata Police in relation to an extortion and corruption case involving the property developer. Using his political connections and intimidation tactics, Mukherjee is accused of having demanded almost 34 lakh from the developer over an extended period, as per investigators.

According to the police, a developer's complaint in mid-July led to this case. According to the complainant, Mukherjee demanded money in return for permitting construction work to continue. According to the police, the accused threatened to hinder the project if they didn't make payments.

After reviewing the complaint, investigators gathered evidence and proceeded to arrest Mukherjee. Several sections have charged him with crimes such as criminal intimidation, corruption, and extortion. Authorities are investigating whether or not others were involved in the alleged racket and if there have been similar complaints against them as well.

He was brought before a court, where officers requested his detention for further investigation.
