IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Kolkata, June 23: Kolkata and large parts of South Bengal witnessed a dramatic change in conditions on Tuesday afternoon as dark clouds suddenly covered the sky, bringing torrential rain, strong winds, and intense lightning.

The sudden spell of severe weather swept across the city, causing widespread disruption in several areas. Reports indicated that multiple large trees were uprooted or damaged due to the powerful storm. One of the most significant incidents occurred on Jawaharlal Nehru Road, where a huge tree collapsed in front of Bidhan Market, creating major obstruction and concern among commuters and local residents.

The impact of the storm was also felt by several temporary roadside businesses in the area. Strong gusts of wind tore through makeshift structures, causing roofs and canopies of a number of stalls and small shops to collapse. The damage highlighted the intensity of the weather system that moved across the city during the afternoon hours.

Traffic movement in several important parts of central Kolkata was severely affected after large trees fell on roads in areas including Dharmatala, Park Street, and the vicinity of the Kolkata High Court. The fallen trees blocked key routes and disrupted the normal flow of vehicles during one of the busiest periods of the day.

Commuters and office-goers faced considerable difficulties while travelling through these major intersections and thoroughfares. The sudden weather event brought normal life in several parts of the city to a near standstill, with many people stranded in traffic congestion and others seeking shelter from the heavy rain and lightning.

Municipal authorities and traffic police personnel immediately launched emergency operations to restore normalcy. Teams were deployed on a war footing to remove fallen trees, clear blocked roads, and manage traffic movement. Officials worked continuously to bring the situation under control and ensure that transportation services could gradually resume.

The abrupt storm served as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of monsoon weather in the region, as residents experienced a dramatic shift from oppressive heat to severe rain and wind within a matter of hours. Authorities continued to monitor the situation closely while urging citizens to remain cautious during adverse weather conditions.
