KMDA Demolishes Statue in Front of Yuva Bharati Stadium in Salt Lake

IIE DIGITAL DESK : Kolkata, May 23: The Yuva Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium) in Salt Lake was demolished on Saturday morning. The demolition was carried out by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA), which used a bulldozer to complete the removal process.

The step was taken as part of ongoing infrastructure development and beautification work around the stadium premises. Authorities had earlier indicated that the statue would either be removed or demolished to improve accessibility and streamline traffic movement in the area.

The state Sports Minister Nisith Pramanik had already mentioned that the structure in front of the stadium would be cleared as part of redevelopment plans. Following that announcement, KMDA proceeded with the demolition work on Saturday morning.

The sudden action created a stir among sports enthusiasts and pedestrians present near the stadium, as the operation took place at a busy public location. The presence of bulldozers and demolition activity drew attention from passers-by in the area.

Officials stated that the statue’s location had been causing congestion, especially during events and peak hours, as it obstructed smooth vehicular movement and pedestrian access near the stadium’s main gate. For this reason, the decision was taken to remove the structure as part of a broader infrastructure upgrade plan.

KMDA sources further confirmed that after the demolition, the area will be cleared and redeveloped. Plans include beautification of the space and widening of the adjoining road to improve traffic flow and overall accessibility around the stadium complex.
