IIE Digital Desk: The Calcutta High Court has rejected Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee's plea seeking permission to travel abroad for treatment of an eye condition, citing his failure to comply with its earlier directions regarding a medical evaluation.

The order came after the Supreme Court asked the High Court to decide the matter within a week. Banerjee had sought permission to undergo specialised treatment overseas, arguing that it was necessary for his medical condition.

However, the High Court noted that he did not appear before the medical board constituted at the state-run SSKM Hospital, despite being directed to do so. According to the court, the medical assessment was an essential step in determining whether treatment abroad was warranted.

While dismissing the plea, the court observed that India's healthcare system has made remarkable progress and is equipped to treat even complex medical conditions. It also pointed out that even Supreme Court judges receive treatment in India, stressing that seeking treatment abroad cannot automatically be considered a necessity.

The court further said that judicial directions and established procedures must be followed before permission for overseas travel can be granted, particularly when legal proceedings involving an individual are still pending. Since Banerjee did not comply with the order to appear before the medical board, the court found no reason to approve his request.

The case drew attention after Banerjee challenged the High Court's earlier directions before the Supreme Court. While the apex court did not examine the merits of the case, it instructed the High Court to hear and decide the application without delay.

With the latest ruling, the Diamond Harbour MP will not be allowed to travel abroad for the proposed eye treatment unless he obtains further legal relief or complies with the conditions laid down by the court.

The judgment underscores the importance of following judicial procedures and reflects the court's confidence in the capabilities of India's healthcare system.
