Kolkata, May 29: The storms and rainfall over the last two days have brought some relief to the people of South Bengal. The Alipore Meteorological Department has forecast strong thunderstorms and rain in several districts of South Bengal, including Kolkata, on Friday. However, while South Bengal is expected to continue receiving stormy weather, rainfall activity in North Bengal is likely to decrease.

The weather office, Kolkata and its adjoining suburban areas may experience gusty winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kilometres per hour from Friday afternoon onwards. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and rain are also likely during this period. The districts expected to witness the most severe impact of the storms and rain include East Midnapore, West Midnapore, Jhargram and Bankura. In these districts, wind speeds may reach 60 to 70 kilometres per hour. Due to the adverse weather conditions, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea.

The Alipore Meteorological Department further stated that scattered thunderstorms and rainfall are likely to continue across the districts of South Bengal during the weekend, especially on Saturday and Sunday. During this period, gusty winds with speeds of 30 to 50 kilometres per hour may occur. However, the intensity of rainfall is expected to decrease after Sunday. Between Monday and Wednesday next week, temperatures are likely to rise again, bringing back uncomfortable humid conditions across the region.

The other hand, North Bengal is expected to see a reduction in rainfall activity. On Friday, districts such as Darjeeling, Malda, and the two Dinajpurs may receive light thunderstorms and rain accompanied by lightning, but no warning for heavy rainfall has been issued for the region. The weather office has also indicated that the chances of storms and rain in North Bengal will reduce further from Saturday onwards.
