Kalyan attacks ‘rebels’ in Delhi; challenges Kakoli and Sharmila over the R.G. Kar issue.

IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Kolkata, New Delhi, June 9: The growing internal tensions within the Trinamool Congress following the recent political shifts in West Bengal, party MP Kalyan Banerjee launched a sharp attack on so-called “rebel” MPs and MLAs of the party. Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi on Tuesday, Banerjee described the dissident camp as “betrayers” and “fair-weather pigeons,” intensifying the ongoing internal rift within the ruling party.

Politically charged statement, he also directly challenged two fellow Trinamool MPs, Dr. Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and Sharmila Sarkar, both of whom are medical professionals by background, over their stance on the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital incident. Raising the sensitive issue, Banerjee questioned their participation in street protests, saying that he himself had taken part in ground-level movements related to the matter.

“On the RG Kar issue, when did Kakoli and Sharmila ever come out on the streets? I have walked on the roads. If they can, let them go to the CBI and tell what happened at RG Kar.” His comments have further escalated political tensions within the party, especially over differing approaches to handling the controversy surrounding the hospital incident.

Banerjee also referred to Abhaya’s mother, Ratna Debnath, making a controversial remark that added another layer to the political storm. He alleged that the issue involving Abhaya had been politicized over time, stating, “Poor Abhaya, her mother used to do politics earlier, and now others are doing the same.”

The MP further claimed that most of the leaders in the rebel camp joined the party after 2011 and had no involvement in the early struggles and movements of the Trinamool Congress. He suggested that these leaders lacked a grassroots connection with the party’s ideological foundation and history. Banerjee also asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would not accept such leaders, implying uncertainty about their political future outside the Trinamool Congress.

The RG Kar case have reignited political debate, with opposition parties and political observers pointing out that sensitive questions surrounding the incident are once again being brought into the spotlight. Some analysts believe that Banerjee’s statements could deepen internal divisions within the Trinamool Congress at a crucial political moment.

The controversy has added fresh momentum to ongoing discussions about factionalism within the party, with leaders now openly exchanging sharp criticisms, raising questions about internal unity ahead of future political challenges.
