IIE Digital Desk: Mamata Banerjee, the West Bengal Chief Minister, has stated that government schools will not have eggs in their lunch, while the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) is set to take over cooking duties in a portion of Kolkata schools starting August 1. ISKCON's decision to remove eggs from its menu has sparked concerns that it is a vegetarian restaurant and the chain.

Banerjee stated that the state government would not make any compromise on children's nutrition. ISKCON will provide cooked vegetarian meals, while eggs will be supplied separately through women's Self-Help Groups (SHG) so students can continue to receive a balanced, protein-rich diet.

Many schools in Kolkata will be included in the pilot program, and ISKCON will cook and distribute meals as part of a mid-day meal scheme run by the state. Because of ISKCON's religious adherence to a vegetarian food policy, the government has devised an alternative arrangement that allows the organization to keep eggs on its menu without changing its cooking methods. The Chief Minister stated that the partnership with ISL is intended to enhance child nutrition and not alter nutritional standards. It was emphasized by her that the school meal programme in Bengal will still include eggs, which are a crucial source of protein.

This comes after public debate and fears expressed by parents, education activists – including some opposition leaders - that eggs might not be included following the involvement of ISKCON. A further clarification has been issued here. Banerjee's statement endeavors to dispel those fears while coordinating the religious organization operation with the state're nutritional obligations.

It is expected that the government will oversee its execution on August 1. Officials claim that ISKCON has created a two-part menu, providing vegetarian options and separate eggs for schoolchildren, to maintain their dietary practices while also meeting their nutritional needs.
