Kolkata: A protest was held near Kolkata's Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport on Friday as tensions grew over continued restrictions on access to the historic Bankra Mosque, also known as the Gouripur Jame Masjid. 

The demonstration came after authorities indefinitely suspended public entry to the 136-year-old mosque, prompting worshippers and local residents to demand the resumption of regular prayers. The mosque, located within the airport's operational zone, has remained inaccessible to devotees since July 11. Initially, airport authorities attributed the closure to repair work on the approach road leading to the site.

However, even after the maintenance work was completed, officials announced that access would remain restricted following security recommendations from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). To express their concerns, members of the mosque management committee and residents from nearby areas gathered for a peaceful demonstration. Many participants wore black ribbons to symbolize their protest against the ongoing restrictions. 

Organisers stressed that the movement would remain non-violent and urged supporters to maintain calm while seeking a resolution to the issue.Security arrangements were significantly strengthened in and around the airport area ahead of the protest. Police personnel, airport security staff, and additional law enforcement teams were deployed to ensure public order and prevent any disruption to airport operations. Authorities also installed barricades and increased surveillance around sensitive locations.

Airport officials have defended the decision, stating that the mosque's location within a high-security aviation zone presents unique security challenges. In the past, worshippers were reportedly allowed entry after identity verification, but security agencies have since expressed concerns regarding civilian movement in such a sensitive area. The Bankra Mosque holds considerable historical importance, having existed long before the construction of the airport. Its proximity to the runway has made it a recurring subject of debate, particularly in relation to airport security requirements and future expansion projects. 

Authorities have reportedly examined relocation options that would preserve the mosque's heritage while addressing operational concerns. Community leaders have indicated that they plan to seek relief through legal and administrative avenues rather than escalating the protest. They have called on the authorities to find a balanced solution that respects both national security considerations and the religious rights of worshippers. The dispute has attracted significant attention across West Bengal and sparked discussions about the challenge of reconciling infrastructure development, security needs, and the preservation of historical and religious landmarks.

Many observers believe that meaningful dialogue between stakeholders will be necessary to arrive at a mutually acceptable solution. As the matter continues to unfold, both airport authorities and community representatives are expected to engage in further discussions aimed at resolving the issue while ensuring that public safety and religious sentiments are adequately addressed.
