'Zero tolerance' for corruption in cooperatives, new minister issues strong message

IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Kolkata, May 22: The newly appointed Cooperation Department Minister Ashok Kirtania has issued a strict warning against corruption and financial irregularities in cooperative institutions, declaring a “zero tolerance” policy during his first official departmental meeting held on Friday.

The minister made it clear that any form of corruption within the cooperative sector would not be tolerated and strict action would be taken at all levels wherever irregularities are found. He also indicated that recovery of misappropriated funds from those involved would be pursued wherever necessary.

Senior officials including regional officers, departmental secretaries, joint secretaries, and other key administrative personnel attended the meeting virtually. The discussion focused on financial transactions of cooperative societies, protection of farmers’ interests, and implementation of central government schemes.

The minister stressed that strict measures would be enforced under the Cooperative Societies Act, and those found guilty of financial misconduct would face action, including recovery of funds allegedly misused. He emphasized that farmers must not be subjected to any form of fraud or exploitation.

He further stated that the cooperative department had not received adequate attention over the past 15 years, resulting in delayed benefits of several central schemes reaching farmers in the state. He also mentioned that discussions had already been held with senior officials of the Union Cooperation Ministry regarding improved coordination.

The minister also said that directives had been received from both the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister to prioritize and strengthen the functioning of the department. He added that coordination with the Union Cooperation Ministry headed by Amit Shah would be maintained for better implementation of schemes.

Referring to past allegations of financial irregularities in cooperative bodies, the minister stated that those who had allegedly misused cooperative funds over the last 15 years should return the money. He also assured that impartial investigations would be conducted into cases of financial misappropriation in banks and cooperative institutions.

While the opposition questioned how effectively such anti-corruption measures would be implemented in practice, officials noted that the minister’s first meeting had already set a clear tone for strict administrative action going forward.
