Want a Spotless Home? Start by Giving Up These 5 Messy Habits

Habits to Quit for a Cleaner and More Organised Home

IIE DIGITAL: A home does not have to be luxurious or expensive to feel welcoming. Often, it is the little things—clean surroundings, an organised room and a clutter-free space—that make you feel instantly comfortable. On the other hand, a messy bed, clothes thrown over chairs, books lying everywhere and used cups left on tables can make even a familiar home feel chaotic. If keeping your room tidy feels like a never-ending task, the problem may lie in a few everyday habits. Change these small routines, and maintaining a cleaner home can become much easier.

One of the most common reasons a room looks untidy is the habit of turning chairs into makeshift wardrobes. Instead of leaving clothes in a pile, decide where each piece belongs. Clothes that need washing should go straight into a laundry basket, while those that can be worn again should be folded or hung up neatly. This simple habit alone can make a noticeable difference to the overall appearance of your room.

If keeping clothes organised is difficult, create more accessible storage. Hooks, hangers or a compact open wardrobe behind a door or against an unused wall can provide a convenient place for everyday outfits. When storage is easy to access, you are less likely to leave clothes lying around and more likely to put them away immediately.

Your bed can also determine how tidy the entire room looks. Even a well-organised space can appear messy if the bedsheet is crumpled and the pillows are scattered. Make your bed soon after waking up—it takes just a few minutes but instantly gives the room a more polished appearance and prevents the mess from piling up throughout the day.

Another common source of clutter is the collection of small items that slowly take over tables and corners. Instead of allowing keys, accessories, stationery and other odds and ends to spread everywhere, keep them together in a small organiser, box or decorative tray. Giving every little item a designated place can make the room look much more organised without requiring a major cleaning session.

Finally, get out of the habit of leaving used cups, bottles, plates and bowls wherever you happen to finish using them. Take them to the kitchen or return them to their designated spot immediately. The same rule applies to anything else you use around the house—put it back where it belongs once you are done. These small habits may seem insignificant, but following them consistently can prevent clutter from building up and help keep your home looking fresh, neat and inviting every day.
