IIE Digital Desk: Pramod Nautiyal, an employee of the Shri Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC), has been arrested on suspicion of theft and improper handling of donations at Babidah Temple in Uttarakhand. This arrest is seen as a significant step in an ongoing case that has raised questions about the way thousands of worshippers have safeguarded their sacred offerings.
Following his arrest by Uttarakhand Police at his residence in Dehradun, Nautiyal was taken to Badrinath for further interrogation. Previously, he was the personal secretary of BKTC, the department that manages the operations of Badrinath and Kedarnath temples.
Claims of corruption in the collection and management of temple donations led to the controversy. A four-person committee that conducted a departmental investigation has reportedly discovered preliminary evidence of financial inconsistencies. Evidence was discovered by investigators in the donation room that suggested money had been taken out without proper protocol. The unauthorized use of temple funds was also scrutinized, with questions being raised about the process. Authorities claim that the recording allegedly shows Nautiyal handling cash, gold and silver coins, donation envelopes, and sacred items from the counting room in a way that raised suspicion. Following these revelations, law enforcement initiated an extensive investigation by registering the case.
The topic was widely discussed after allegations of financial irregularities were made public on social media platforms. The formal complaint filed by Bhairav Sena prompted greater public pressure for accountability and an in-depth investigation to be conducted. This was met with criticism.
In response to the allegations, the Uttarakhand government established a high-level committee consisting of three members to investigate the matter. Currently, the investigation is being conducted by various agencies, such as the police, a Special Investigation Team (SIT), BKTC's internal inquiry panel, and specialized committees led by the Garhwal Commissioner.
Meanwhile, Nautiyal has appealed both his suspension and the FIR lodged against him in the Uttarakhand High Court. Despite ongoing legal proceedings, additional hearings are anticipated in the coming weeks. The state government has also instructed BKTC officials to take strict action against those found guilty of financial misconduct. Once the investigations are finished, authorities will ensure accountability. Reuters reported that.
Temple donations have become a symbol of the faith and devotion of millions of pilgrims, leading to significant public interest in the case. Accusations of misappropriation of these offerings have intensified calls for stricter supervision, greater transparency, and more stringent financial controls in the management of religious institutions.
As the investigation continues, officials are trying to determine whether alleged misconduct was caused by specific acts of behaviour or part of broader failures in administrative functions. The outcomes could impact future plans for the management and supervision of donations at significant religious institutions throughout India.
