IIE Digital Desk: On Tuesday, the Supreme Court rejected a petition filed by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) to restrict Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Public comments: Joseph Vijay, left, and members of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) make public remarks on the Karur stampede after meeting families yesterday.

A bench comprising Justices K.V. The plea was disputed by Viswanathan and Alok Aradhe, who claimed that the court cannot intervene in the conduct of an elected Chief Minister. According to the judges, courts cannot be used as a forum for political disagreements.

According to the DMK, Vijay's intention to visit the families of the victims and read statements from TVK leaders could have an impact on witnesses involved with the CBI investigation into last year's chaos. The party requested the court to prevent political leaders from contacting the victims' families or making public comments on the case during the ongoing investigation. However, the apex court denied the request for such relief. The court declared that it would not impede the official actions of any Chief Minister or give instructions that might conflict with its earlier ruling for conducting a CBI investigation under court supervision. The judges added that political conflicts should not be brought before the court as a legal matter.

The DMK followed the court's observations and withdrew its application, but may still seek other legal remedies. Hence, the Supreme Court decided the matter as dropped.

The Karur uprising that occurred during a TVK political event in September last year was connected to the petition. Over 140 people were injured and 41 lost their lives in the tragic incident. The CBI was instructed by the Supreme Court to investigate the circumstances of the tragedy, which was considered a grave matter. The inquiry is ongoing under the jurisdiction of the judiciary. Later this week, Chief Minister Vijay will be in Karur to offer his condolences and meet with the families of those who lost their lives. While the DMK maintained that such interactions could potentially harm the investigation's integrity, according to the Supreme Court' decision, there was no valid reason to prevent the visit or restrict the Chief Minister from speaking publicly.

This verdict confirms the court' sstance that judicial interference should be restricted and not involve controlling the daily actions and public discourse of elected officials, particularly when an impartial inquiry is already underway.
