IIE DIGITAL DESK : March 26:The 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly election, the Election Commission has cancelled the nomination papers of several Congress candidates, including in some high-profile constituencies, dealing a blow to the opposition and bolstering the prospects of the ruling BJP and its allies. Although official reasons for the cancellations have not yet been disclosed, procedural issues during scrutiny were cited as a likely factor, triggering political controversy and intense reactions across party lines.

Among the seats affected, the nomination of the Congress candidate in the Jalukbari Assembly constituency, where Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is contesting, was reportedly invalidated, leaving the BJP’s position in the seat significantly strengthened.  Other Congress nominations that were rejected include candidates from Dhakuakhana and Haflong, reducing direct competition in constituencies where the BJP had been preparing a strong challenge.

On Tuesday during the scrutiny process, the Election Commission also rejected nominations of a Congress candidate from Barpeta due to procedural lapses, further adding to setbacks for the party’s electoral push in Assam.  Although detailed explanations for each cancellation remain pending on the election commission’s official portal, such decisions typically arise from issues including incomplete paperwork, errors in the nomination forms, or failure to meet filing requirements within deadlines.

The cancellations have created what some analysts describe as a “clear field” or less contested path for the BJP in certain constituencies, enhancing the party’s confidence in securing more seats as polling approaches. This shift has added momentum to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance’s campaign in the state, where they are seeking to consolidate their influence against a fragmented opposition.

The Assam elections are shaping up to be a fiercely contested affair, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma seeking a sixth consecutive term from Jalukbari, a seat he has held for multiple terms and one that is seen as strategically important for both the BJP and its rivals.

Political circles have reacted strongly to the cancellation decisions. Opposition parties have criticised the move, alleging it reflects administrative oversight or disadvantageous handling of nomination scrutiny. Party leaders and grassroots workers have voiced concern over the impact on campaign dynamics, describing the situation as “disheartening” for democratically contested elections.

The same time, senior BJP leaders have welcomed the developments, asserting that the party is set for a strong mandate in the assembly polls considering the current electoral landscape and the opposition’s organisational challenges. The upcoming election results are widely anticipated to influence Assam’s political trajectory in the years ahead.

The nomination scrutiny process continues to unfold as the deadline approaches, and further updates from the Election Commission are expected to clarify the official reasons behind the rejections and outline the final list of candidates contesting in the 2026 Assam election.
