IIE DIGITAL DESK ; New Delhi, June 16: The Central Health and Family Welfare Ministry has issued a notification making it mandatory to have a doctor’s prescription to purchase cough syrup. According to the official directive, all types of syrups, including cough syrups, will no longer be available for direct purchase over the counter without a valid prescription.
The ministry has stated that from now on, consumers will need to present a prescription issued by a registered medical practitioner in order to buy cough syrups from pharmacies. This move has been introduced as part of stricter regulatory measures to prevent the unnecessary and uncontrolled sale of such medicines.
With this new rule, the common practice of purchasing cough syrup directly from medical stores for minor cough and cold symptoms will no longer be permitted. Patients will now be required to consult doctors first and obtain proper prescriptions before accessing these medications.
The decision has been taken by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to ensure safer use of cough syrups and to curb their misuse in the market.
