Rejecting the Opposition's allegations, Patra said that it was not Gyanesh Kumar who was helping the BJP but Lord Ganesha, whom he described as the deity of wisdom, knowledge and intellect. His remarks came shortly before Opposition MPs were scheduled to march from Parliament towards the Election Commission headquarters as part of their protest over various electoral issues.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday morning, Patra said, "Gyanesh ji is not helping us, Lord Ganesha himself is helping us. It is Shri Ganesha, the deity of wisdom, knowledge and intellect, who is helping the BJP, not any Gyanesh ji."
Patra's statement was aimed at countering the Opposition's repeated allegations against the Election Commission and its Chief Election Commissioner. The BJP leader sought to turn the Opposition's criticism into a political argument, saying that the people of India possessed sufficient wisdom and understanding to make their own decisions at the ballot box.
Taking a further swipe at the Opposition, Patra claimed that voters were well aware of the political forces that, according to him, represented dynastic politics, corruption and support for elements associated with terrorism. He said that the electorate would not support such forces and suggested that the people were capable of distinguishing between different political leaderships and their claims.
"There is enough wisdom, knowledge and understanding among the people of India. They know very well that they should not vote for forces that stand for dynastic politics, corruption and support for terrorists," Patra said.
He also brought up the issue of Captain Smit, saying that people were aware of those political leaders who, according to him, could not even post a message of support for the pilot. Patra argued that such actions revealed the character of the political leadership concerned and claimed that the public was closely observing their conduct.
Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's political messaging, Patra said that people knew which leadership they needed to support. He referred to the slogan, "Main desh nahi jhukne dunga", meaning "I will not allow the country to bow down", while presenting it as a symbol of strong national leadership.
The Opposition's protest march had been announced over a series of allegations against the Election Commission. INDIA bloc MPs planned to march from Parliament to the Election Commission headquarters to raise their concerns and demand attention to issues surrounding the electoral process.
The protest programme has added to the ongoing political confrontation between the Opposition and the BJP, with both sides continuing to trade allegations over the functioning of the Election Commission and the electoral process.
Patra's remarks, delivered immediately before the Opposition's march, have now become another point of political debate. While the INDIA bloc has sought to highlight its allegations against the poll panel through the protest, the BJP has strongly rejected the charges and accused the Opposition of attempting to create political controversy around the election process.
The latest exchange reflects the growing political temperature surrounding the Election Commission, with the ruling BJP and Opposition parties continuing to present sharply contrasting narratives ahead of the next phase of political developments.
