The definition of war has undergone a radical change: Rajnath Singh

IIE DIGITAL DESK ; June 13: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated that the very definition of warfare has undergone a fundamental transformation in modern times. He urged the new generation of warriors of the Indian Air Force to deeply understand emerging methods and strategies of modern warfare.

The Combined Graduation Parade (CGP) of the 217th course at the Air Force Academy (AFA) in Dundigal, Telangana, on Saturday morning, Rajnath Singh praised the role of the Indian Air Force and highlighted its contribution to national security. He said, “The Indian Air Force has always acted as India’s shield and sword. Recently, during Operation Sindoor, we witnessed the same spirit among all of you. Our Air Force was able to destroy terrorist hideouts with extreme precision and accuracy. The successful execution of such a major operation was made possible due to our indigenous military equipment as well as the dedicated contribution of the highly trained, brave and disciplined officers of the Indian Air Force. I am confident that the Indian Air Force will continue to perform its responsibilities in the same manner in future operations as well.”

The Defence Minister further explained that traditionally warfare was largely defined by two major elements—soldiers and weapons. However, in today’s conflicts, the attacking soldiers or even the weapons carrying out the attack are often not directly visible. Modern battlefields are increasingly dominated by advanced systems such as radars, satellites, drones, sensors and robotics, making it extremely difficult to identify the opposing side or its military equipment.

Situations are now emerging where even control over traffic systems and CCTV networks can fall into the hands of adversaries, demonstrating how drastically the nature of warfare has changed. “The definition of war has undergone a complete transformation. I am confident that your training, various programmes and exercises have prepared you to face uncertain and unexpected challenges. I urge you, the new generation of warriors, to understand these future methods and strategies of warfare in depth,” Rajnath Singh said.

Rajnath Singh further remarked that the visionary thinking of the new officers would play an important role in helping India become a developed and powerful nation by 2047. He also extended his greetings to Air Chief Marshal A P Singh, saying, “You are not only a test pilot but also a proven military leader. I have complete confidence that under your leadership, the Indian Air Force will continue to reach new heights of success.”

The Defence Minister’s remarks reflected India’s increasing focus on technological advancements, indigenous defence capabilities and preparing its armed forces to tackle the challenges of next-generation warfare in an increasingly complex global security environment.
