IIE DIGITAL DESK | June 22: Iran and Belgium shared the points after a tense and closely contested battle in the FIFA World Cup group stage, with neither side able to find the decisive breakthrough. The goalless draw has made the race for qualification to the knockout stage increasingly complicated in Group G.

The Group G encounter was played at the SoFi Stadium in California on Sunday night, where both teams fought hard but failed to convert their opportunities into goals. Despite Belgium dominating possession and creating several chances, Iran’s resilient defence and outstanding goalkeeping ensured they secured a valuable point.

The result extended Belgium’s disappointing run in the World Cup, as they have now failed to win their last four matches in the tournament, including two games in the ongoing edition. The European side has recorded three draws and one defeat during this period. Belgium had started their current World Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw against Egypt and once again had to settle for a share of the points.

Iran also registered their second consecutive draw of the tournament. In their opening match, the Asian side showed great fighting spirit by coming from behind twice to earn a 2-2 draw against New Zealand. The latest result has kept their hopes of progressing to the knockout rounds alive.

The Group G standings have now become extremely tight. Iran are currently at the top of the table with two points from two matches, while Belgium are placed second with the same number of points. New Zealand and Egypt, who have played one match each, have one point apiece, making the final round of group matches crucial for all four teams.

The hero for Iran was experienced goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand, who delivered a remarkable performance between the posts. Belgium enjoyed nearly 70 percent possession and took 23 shots in search of a goal, with seven of those attempts being on target. However, Beiranvand produced seven crucial saves to deny the Belgian attackers and preserve a precious clean sheet for his side.

The final round of Group G fixtures on Saturday, Belgium will face New Zealand in a must-win encounter, while Iran will take on Egypt at the same time. The Asian nation will also be chasing history, as Iran have never qualified for the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup, making their upcoming clash even more significant.
