Over the years, these unique rock formations have become deeply woven into Bengal’s cultural fabric, holding memories of cinema, literature and local heritage. After a prolonged period of neglect, the iconic destination is now looking towards a new beginning with plans to restore its lost charm and bring it back to the tourism map.

The proposed ‘Shakti Peeth Tourism Circuit’ has sparked fresh interest in the region, with plans to include Mama-Bhagne Hills along with the ancestral home of renowned Bengali writer and filmmaker Shailajananda Mukhopadhyay. The initiative aims to create a cultural trail that blends spirituality, history, literature and art, offering visitors a richer experience of Bengal’s heritage.

The connection between Mama-Bhagne Hills and legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray remains one of its biggest attractions. While bringing Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay’s novel Abhijan to the big screen, Ray searched for a landscape that could mirror the loneliness, struggle and emotional depth of the story. The rugged rocks, dry surroundings and endless stretches of red earth at Mama-Bhagne Hills perfectly captured the mood he wanted, creating a powerful backdrop for Soumitra Chatterjee’s memorable portrayal of Narsingh.

Ray’s lens gave the hills a new identity, transforming them from a geographical landmark into a destination of cinematic importance. Even decades later, film lovers continue to visit the spot to experience the landscape that became part of Bengali cinema’s rich legacy.

The influence of Mama-Bhagne Hills also extends into Ray’s literary world. The location found a place in the famous Feluda adventure ‘Robertson-er Ruby’, where local legends and the mystery surrounding the rocks added an element of intrigue to the story. This blend of reality and imagination further strengthened the cultural value of the hills.

Dubrajpur’s connection with Bengali culture does not end there. The ancestral home of Shailajananda Mukhopadhyay, a celebrated name in Bengali literature and cinema, adds another layer of historical significance to the region. Its inclusion in the tourism circuit is expected to highlight the contributions of one of Bengal’s notable creative minds.

Earlier efforts had been made to develop Mama-Bhagne Hills as a tourist attraction, including the creation of a park in the area. However, years of limited maintenance gradually affected its appeal. The latest revival plan focuses on beautification, improved facilities and better infrastructure to provide visitors with a memorable experience.

The proposed tourism route could connect Mama-Bhagne Hills with nearby religious and historical landmarks, creating a unique journey through Birbhum’s cultural landscape. Such an initiative would bring together nature, spirituality, literature and cinema in a single destination.

With renewed focus and development plans, Mama-Bhagne Hills could soon reclaim its former glory, emerging not just as a scenic spot but as a living tribute to Bengal’s artistic heritage and timeless storytelling tradition.
