IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Habra, May 11: The heartwarming celebration of culture amid daily hustle, women passengers of the Habra–Sealdah local train marked Rabindra Jayanti onboard their regular morning commute. Transforming a train compartment into a vibrant cultural space, the commuters celebrated the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore with songs, poetry recitations and dance performances.

The celebration took place on the 8:55 am Habra–Sealdah local train, where a designated coach was beautifully decorated to reflect the essence of Bengali tradition. This year marked the eleventh edition of the unique initiative, which has become a much-anticipated annual tradition among regular passengers.

The women adorned the compartment with flowers, traditional gamchas, decorated bamboo trays and hand fans, creating an atmosphere steeped in Bengali heritage. Lines from Tagore’s songs and excerpts from his poetry were displayed across the coach, adding a literary charm to the festive décor.

Before the train departed from Habra station, both women and male co-passengers paid floral tribute to a portrait of Rabindranath Tagore placed at the entrance of the compartment. The train driver also joined in to offer his respects, highlighting the collective spirit of the occasion.

The train began its journey toward Sealdah, the compartment resonated with live renditions of Rabindra Sangeet, heartfelt recitations and graceful dance performances. The celebration continued throughout the journey, turning an ordinary weekday commute into a moving cultural event.

Participants said the initiative was born out of necessity, as many working women are unable to attend formal Rabindra Jayanti programmes due to professional commitments. By organizing the celebration during their daily commute, they found a meaningful way to honor the poet without disrupting their work schedules.

The initiative not only paid tribute to Rabindranath Tagore’s enduring legacy but also showcased how cultural traditions can thrive even in the busiest moments of urban life. As the train reached Sealdah station, the participants concluded the programme and proceeded to their respective workplaces, carrying with them the festive spirit of the day.
