College Street’s Future: Agnimitra Paul Reviews Book Hub, Discusses Government Strategy

IIE DIGITAL: College Street will not be cleared or displaced, but will instead receive a complete transformation, West Bengal Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul had said. Taking a step towards turning the government’s vision into reality, Paul visited Kolkata’s iconic book market early Wednesday morning and inspected the entire area.

Accompanied by Kolkata Municipal Corporation Commissioner Smita Pandey and senior officials, Agnimitra Paul walked through the College Street zone to understand the existing situation and discuss possible changes. During the inspection, she interacted with pedestrians, spoke with local stakeholders and held discussions with officials about creating a more organised and attractive version of the city’s famous book district.

According to the proposed plan, a section of College Street will be developed as a no-vehicle zone, where cars and unnecessary traffic movement will be restricted. The initiative aims to create a quieter atmosphere for book lovers, students and visitors by reducing traffic noise and congestion. The government is also considering shifting some book stalls to a planned location, while keeping the main College Street road untouched for now due to its importance as a major traffic corridor.

The makeover plan focuses on turning College Street into a dedicated book destination with improved facilities. The area may feature book stalls, stationery shops, cafés and reading spaces with benches where visitors can sit and enjoy books peacefully. Cycling will also be encouraged, while battery-operated vehicles will be available to assist elderly visitors.

Explaining the government’s approach, Agnimitra Paul said College Street is not just a marketplace but an important cultural landmark known as Kolkata’s “book hub”. She stressed that the area should continue to remain centred around books, educational materials and literary activities while getting a cleaner and more modern appearance.

She clarified that the existing booksellers would not lose their businesses. Instead, the plan is to relocate stalls in a systematic way and provide shopkeepers with newly designed structures. The aim is to improve the visual appeal of the area by replacing the current uneven stall designs with a uniform and organised setup.

Pointing out the need for better aesthetics, Paul said the different coloured tin coverings currently used by shops do not match the character of College Street. The government wants to create a more attractive environment inspired by well-planned book markets around the world.

The proposed changes have received a mixed but largely positive response from booksellers. Many welcomed the idea of beautifying College Street while keeping their businesses intact. However, some traders also urged the authorities to ensure that the redevelopment does not impact their daily income.

With the proposed makeover, the government aims to preserve the historic identity of College Street while giving it a modern, reader-friendly and world-class appearance. The inspection marks the beginning of a larger plan to transform one of Kolkata’s most iconic cultural landmarks without affecting its traditional character.
