IIE DIGITAL DESK : The Election Commission of India has partially revised its earlier directive regarding the deployment of IPS officers as observers for upcoming elections in other states, bringing relief to five senior officers who will no longer be required to leave West Bengal for election duty.
The Election Commission had issued a notification assigning 15 IPS officers from West Bengal to serve as police observers in various states for the upcoming elections. The list included senior officers such as Bidhannagar Police Commissioner Murali Dhar Sharma and Siliguri Police Commissioner Syed Waqar Raza, along with several other officers including Amandeep, Akash Magharia, and Praveen Tripathi.
within 24 hours of the initial order, the Commission modified its decision following internal review, according to official sources. As per the revised directive, Murali Dhar Sharma, Syed Waqar Raza, Amandeep, Akash Magharia, and Praveen Tripathi have been exempted from the inter-state observer assignment. Their names have reportedly been placed “in reserve,” meaning they will not be immediately relieved from their current postings.
With this revision, the remaining 10 IPS officers from the original list will proceed to their assigned duties as election observers in other states. Among those confirmed for deployment are officers such as Alok Rajoria, Indira Mukherjee, Dhritiman Sarkar, C. Sudhakar, Abhijit Banerjee, Bhaskar Mukherjee, Rashid Munir Khan, and Priyabrata Roy.
According to the original notification issued by the Election Commission in New Delhi, Murali Dhar Sharma and Syed Waqar Raza were specifically appointed as police observers for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The broader list also included several other senior officers from West Bengal cadres assigned to different states.
Election Commission officials stated that the partial rollback was part of administrative adjustments, though no detailed public clarification has been issued regarding the sudden change in deployment orders.
The revised decision has drawn attention amid ongoing discussions around large-scale administrative transfers ahead of elections, as the Commission continues to finalise arrangements for smooth conduct of polls across multiple states.
