IIE DIGITAL DESK : The political temperatures begin to rise ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections in West Bengal, one question continues to dominate the public and political discourse—how many phases will the election be conducted in and when will the voting process begin. Addressing these growing queries, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has indicated that the decision on the number of polling phases will depend largely on the law and order assessment across the state.

After the conclusion of a two-day full bench meeting of the Election Commission of India, Kumar spoke to journalists and provided an update on the preparations for the upcoming elections in West Bengal. While expectations were high that the commission might give a clear indication about the election schedule, the Chief Election Commissioner made it clear that no final decision has yet been taken regarding the number of phases.

The Election Commission has already initiated discussions with representatives of various political parties operating in the state. These consultations are part of the commission’s routine process before announcing the election schedule. Leaders from different parties have reportedly expressed their views on the conduct of the polls, including concerns related to security, logistics and administrative arrangements.

Kumar emphasised that the ultimate decision will be based on a detailed assessment of the law and order situation in the state. Security arrangements play a crucial role in determining the number of phases in which an election is conducted, particularly in large and politically sensitive states like West Bengal. The commission will carefully examine reports from the state administration, central security agencies and other relevant authorities before finalising the poll schedule.

West Bengal has witnessed multi-phase elections in the past, largely due to the need for extensive deployment of central forces and the logistical challenges of conducting polls across diverse regions of the state. The state’s political landscape is often highly competitive, which makes ensuring peaceful voting a top priority for the Election Commission.

The upcoming election is expected to be particularly significant as it will determine the next government in one of India’s most politically vibrant states. With political parties already gearing up for the battle, the election schedule announcement is eagerly awaited by both leaders and voters.

Political observers note that the commission’s emphasis on law and order indicates that the number of phases could once again be relatively high, similar to previous Assembly elections in the state. Multi-phase voting allows the Election Commission to move central security forces from one constituency to another, thereby strengthening security arrangements during the entire polling process.

The Election Commission has maintained that the situation is still under review. The commission will continue consultations with stakeholders and examine all administrative and security aspects before making an official announcement.

As anticipation grows across West Bengal, all eyes are now on the Election Commission’s next move. The final decision regarding the polling phases and the election schedule will likely set the stage for one of the most closely watched political contests in the state in recent years.
