Reacting to the continuous increase in fuel prices, Rahul Gandhi took to social media platform X on Monday, accusing the government of burdening the public through indirect price hikes. He described the Prime Minister as the “messenger of inflation,” alleging that petrol and diesel prices are being increased in phases in a way that silently drains the pockets of ordinary people.
Rahul Gandhi claimed that he had been warning for months about an upcoming economic crisis, but alleged that the Prime Minister remained focused on elections instead of addressing economic concerns. He further stated that immediately after the election process, fuel prices were increased by around Rs 8, which, according to him, reflects a pattern of repeated price hikes that will continue in the future.
Rahul Gandhi also accused the government of following a policy where promises are made during elections but citizens are later burdened with rising inflation. He alleged that the ruling leadership is consistently increasing financial pressure on the public, particularly through fuel price hikes that directly affect transportation costs and daily essentials.
The remarks have once again intensified political debate over inflation and fuel pricing in India, with opposition leaders blaming the government for economic stress faced by middle-class and lower-income households. The central government, however, has in the past attributed fuel price fluctuations to global crude oil rates and international market conditions.
Petrol and diesel prices continue to rise across several states, the issue has become a major political flashpoint, with leaders from different parties exchanging sharp statements over responsibility for inflation and its impact on the economy.
