IIE DIGITAL DESK : The tragedy occurred while cooking when a tiger suddenly attacked from behind and dragged away a woman. The incident has once again highlighted the constant danger faced by people working in and around the Sundarbans forest area.

According to local sources, the victim, identified as Vandana Das, a fisherwoman from Bhubaneswar Gaurer Chak, had gone to collect crabs in the Sundarbans due to financial hardship. On Sunday, the 12th, she and her husband had set out by boat from Sudhir Das Ghat near Gaurer Chak towards the Kolas Phulbari forest area.

Around 1 pm, while she was cooking food on the boat, a tiger suddenly leapt on her from behind. As the tiger dragged her away, her husband started screaming for help. Other fishermen nearby also raised an alarm, after which the tiger released her and fled back into the forest.

The severely injured woman was immediately rescued and taken to Jaynagar Kulpi Rural Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Police from Kultali station have sent the body for post-mortem examination.

The stove was still burning on the boat when the life of a fisherwoman’s family came to a tragic end. The incident has cast a shadow of mourning over the locality, while fear has once again spread among forest-dependent communities in the Sundarbans due to repeated tiger attacks.
