IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Murshidabad, June 11: The e-rickshaw carrying school students met with an accident in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district while on its way to school on Thursday morning, leaving six students injured. All the injured have been admitted to hospital for treatment. Authorities have stated that none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening, although two students and the e-rickshaw driver reportedly sustained serious injuries.

The accident occurred on the old National Highway near Sargachi in Murshidabad during the morning hours when students were travelling to school. The e-rickshaw, which was carrying several school-going children, reportedly lost control and collided with a pickup van approaching from the opposite direction.

The impact of the collision left two girl students seriously injured along with the driver of the e-rickshaw. Four other girl students also suffered injuries in the accident. Local residents and passersby rushed to the spot immediately after the crash and assisted in rescuing the injured passengers.

The injured were subsequently transported to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital for medical treatment and observation. Hospital sources indicated that the victims are receiving necessary care and that doctors are closely monitoring their condition. While some of the injured sustained significant injuries, officials have expressed relief that no fatalities were reported in the incident.

Eyewitnesses present at the scene claimed that the e-rickshaw was travelling at a relatively high speed before the accident occurred. According to their accounts, a stray dog suddenly came onto the road, forcing the driver to take evasive action. In the process, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer into the path of the oncoming pickup van.

The accident briefly disrupted traffic movement along the stretch of road as local residents gathered at the scene. Police personnel later arrived and initiated an investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to the collision. Authorities are also examining whether excessive speed or other factors contributed to the accident.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns regarding the safety of school transportation in rural and semi-urban areas, where e-rickshaws are frequently used to ferry students to and from educational institutions. Parents and local residents have called for stricter safety measures and greater vigilance to prevent similar accidents in the future.
