The two brothers are now accused by locals of amassing significant wealth during the Trinamool Congress regime, transforming from a mud house background to multi-storey buildings within a decade. Following the change in political climate, posters have appeared demanding accountability and the return of allegedly misappropriated money, creating widespread tension in the area.
Shahabuddin Khan, who previously served as an influential figure in local governance as a panchayat samiti official and block-level party president, is alleged to have held considerable control over local administration in Goghat-2. His younger brother, Giasuddin Khan, entered politics later and became the head of the Shyambazar gram panchayat in 2018, after which their influence is said to have expanded significantly.
Locals claim that the family’s rise in wealth includes the construction of large residential buildings, including a multi-storey house and other properties in the region. Allegations have also surfaced from residents accusing the duo of misuse of power, extortion, and corruption during their tenure in local bodies. Some villagers even compared the situation to earlier incidents of political unrest in Sandeshkhali, highlighting fear and intimidation in the area during their period of influence.
Residents further alleged that intimidation and abuse of power were common, with claims that people were pressured into providing free goods and services, and that opposition to their authority often led to threats, violence, or property damage. These allegations have intensified public anger following the recent political changes in the state.
Both leaders have strongly denied the accusations, calling them politically motivated attempts to defame them. They maintain that the claims are false and part of a conspiracy to tarnish their image.
Local residents continue to demand a thorough investigation and recovery of allegedly misused public funds, stating that accountability is necessary following years of alleged misuse of political power in the region.
