
IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Asansol, June 2: Police on Monday night arrested Trinamool Congress councillor Tarun Chakraborty of Ward 87 in Asansol Municipal Corporation over allegations of misappropriation and irregularities in government tarpaulin distribution schemes. The action was taken following accusations of irregularities involving government relief materials meant for the poor and underprivileged.
The Asansol North police station initiated an investigation after receiving specific complaints. Following the collection of preliminary documentary evidence, Tarun Chakraborty was arrested. A large quantity of government tarpaulin was recovered from his custody, which had been provided by the administration for distribution among the needy.
The arrest of the Trinamool councillor has created a political stir across West Bardhaman district. Opposition parties, including the BJP, have demanded an impartial and thorough investigation into the matter. Police are also examining whether the councillor has any links with coal, sand, and land mafia operations in the area, beyond the tarpaulin case. The Trinamool Congress has yet to issue any official response regarding the incident. Police stated that the investigation is ongoing through interrogation of the accused and verification of necessary documents.
