IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Agartala, June 23: Devotees thronged the historic Lakshminarayan Bari Temple in Agartala on Tuesday to participate in the observance of Ambubachi, one of the most significant spiritual and folk festivals in Hindu tradition. The festival witnessed enthusiastic participation from women devotees, who took part in the traditional Sindoor Khela ceremony, applying vermilion to one another and offering prayers for the well-being of their husbands, families, society, and the community at large. The temple premises resonated with an atmosphere of devotion, faith, and celebration throughout the day.

The religious calendar, the Ambubachi festival began on Monday night. The 2026 observance commenced on June 22 and will conclude on June 26. The festival is celebrated from the seventh to the tenth day of the bright fortnight of the month of Ashadha. Across different regions of India, the occasion is also known as Ambubachi, Amabati, or Raja Festival.

Hindu beliefs, this period marks the annual menstruation cycle of Mother Earth. Religious scriptures and ancient traditions describe the Earth as Dharitri Mata, or Mother Earth. It is widely believed that during Ambubachi, the creative and regenerative powers of nature are renewed, after which the earth regains fertility and becomes ready for new life and growth. This belief gives the festival special significance, particularly in agrarian communities that depend on agriculture and the cycles of nature.

Many devotees believe that just as nature becomes fertile and prosperous after Ambubachi, human life too is blessed with happiness, prosperity, and positive energy. The festival is therefore regarded not only as a religious observance but also as a celebration of fertility, creation, and the nurturing power of nature.

The early hours of Tuesday, large numbers of devotees gathered at the Lakshminarayan Bari Temple to offer prayers and participate in special religious rituals. Along with regular worship ceremonies, special prayers and spiritual observances were conducted throughout the day.

Married women followed long-standing traditions by applying sindoor to one another and praying for the long life, good health, and prosperity of their husbands, as well as peace and happiness within their families. Many devotees believe that sindoor applied during Ambubachi symbolizes eternal marital fortune and brings blessings and harmony to married life.

One woman devotee visiting the temple said that she had come to Lakshminarayan Bari, as she does every year, to offer prayers for the welfare of her husband, children, family, and society. She added that participating in Sindoor Khela with fellow devotees is a cherished tradition and that people wait throughout the year for this special occasion.

The celebrations were not confined to Lakshminarayan Bari alone. Temples and religious institutions across Agartala also witnessed large gatherings of devotees observing Ambubachi through prayers, rituals, and cultural activities. The festival evolved into a vibrant confluence of spirituality, social harmony, and cultural heritage.

Ambubachi has been observed as a symbol of reverence for womanhood, respect for nature’s fertility, and prayers for family welfare and prosperity. Even in modern times, the festival continues to strengthen emotional bonds, spiritual faith, and cultural traditions, preserving a heritage that remains deeply rooted in the hearts of millions of devotees.
