IIE Digital Desk : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms across various districts of West Bengal on Friday, May 16. This prediction comes as a relief to residents enduring a prolonged spell of intense heat and humidity.

According to the IMD's latest bulletin, an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the Andaman Sea is expected to evolve into a low-pressure system between May 16 and May 22. This development may lead to the formation of Cyclone Shakti between May 23 and May 28, potentially impacting coastal regions of Odisha and West Bengal.

The southwest monsoon has already advanced into parts of the south Bay of Bengal, the south Andaman Sea, and the Nicobar Islands, marking an early onset. This progression is anticipated to bring moderate to heavy rainfall to the Nicobar Islands and may influence weather patterns across the Indian subcontinent.

In Kolkata, residents have been experiencing soaring temperatures, with highs reaching 39.1°C accompanied by high humidity levels. The anticipated rainfall is expected to provide some respite from the sweltering conditions.

The IMD has advised residents to stay updated with weather forecasts and take necessary precautions during the anticipated adverse weather conditions. Authorities are also monitoring the developing weather systems closely, given their potential to influence the advancing monsoon season and impact travel and daily life in the region.

As the situation evolves, further updates from the IMD will provide more clarity on the monsoon’s progression and any potential cyclonic developments.
