
The mission on Friday, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar shared the update through his official X handle, stating that Operation Amistad had officially commenced. He said the two C-17 aircraft had already taken off for Venezuela to support rescue and relief operations in the aftermath of the devastating earthquakes that struck the South American nation.
The External Affairs Minister, the humanitarian assistance package includes a fully equipped field hospital unit capable of providing emergency medical treatment in disaster-hit regions. India has also dispatched more than 35 tonnes of relief supplies, including essential medicines, emergency equipment, and humanitarian aid, along with two BHISHM Cubes, advanced portable medical units designed to provide rapid healthcare support in emergency situations.
Dr. Jaishankar emphasized that India stands firmly with the Government and the people of Venezuela during this difficult period. He reaffirmed that India remains committed to extending every possible assistance required for relief and rehabilitation efforts and will continue to provide support as the situation evolves and further needs arise.
The humanitarian mission comes after Venezuela was struck by two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.5 and 7.2 on the Richter scale. The twin tremors caused widespread devastation in the capital city of Caracas and several surrounding regions, leading to extensive damage to homes, public infrastructure, and multi-storey buildings. Rescue teams continue to search through the debris as authorities work to assist affected communities.
The latest available information, the earthquakes have claimed the lives of more than 200 people, while hundreds of others have been injured or displaced. The destruction has left thousands in urgent need of shelter, medical care, food, and other essential supplies.
