
IIE DIGIAL DESK | June 24, 2026 : Security forces intensified preparations for the upcoming Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra by conducting a comprehensive joint mock drill on Wednesday morning in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district. The exercise was carried out at the Chanderkote and Mehar langar sites, located along the strategically important Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, as part of efforts to ensure the safety and security of thousands of pilgrims expected to participate in the annual pilgrimage.
The mock drill formed a crucial component of the extensive security arrangements being put in place ahead of the yatra, which attracts devotees from across India and abroad each year. Authorities are leaving no room for complacency and are undertaking detailed preparedness exercises to test the effectiveness of emergency response mechanisms under different scenarios.
Multiple security and emergency response agencies participated in the coordinated exercise, including the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and various disaster management agencies. The drill was designed to assess inter-agency coordination, response times, communication systems, and crisis management capabilities in the event of any security or emergency situation during the pilgrimage.
The exercise, personnel simulated a range of challenging scenarios that could potentially arise along the pilgrimage route or at facilities serving pilgrims. These included a fire emergency at a langar site, the detection of a suspicious drone in the vicinity, and an explosion involving a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (car IED). Emergency teams were required to react swiftly, secure the affected areas, evacuate civilians, and coordinate rescue and response operations according to established protocols.
Officials observed the performance of various units throughout the exercise to evaluate operational readiness and identify areas where further improvements may be required. The drill also provided an opportunity for participating agencies to practice coordinated action under high-pressure conditions and strengthen their ability to respond effectively to multiple threats simultaneously.
The Chanderkote and Mehar langar centers, where the exercise was conducted, serve as important support locations for pilgrims traveling along the Jammu-Srinagar highway. These facilities provide free food and assistance to devotees during the yatra and are expected to witness significant footfall during the pilgrimage season.
The scale and importance of the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra, security agencies have significantly enhanced surveillance, monitoring, and deployment measures across key transit points and pilgrimage routes. Advanced technologies, including drone monitoring systems, surveillance equipment, and rapid response units, are expected to play a major role in ensuring the safety of pilgrims throughout the journey.
Authorities have emphasized that the primary objective of the exercise was to ensure seamless coordination among all participating agencies and to guarantee that every possible contingency can be handled quickly and efficiently. The successful completion of the mock drill reflects the ongoing efforts of security forces and civil administration to provide a safe and secure environment for devotees undertaking the sacred pilgrimage.
