IIE DIGITAL DESK ; June 30, 2026 | Kolkata : Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Rajya Sabha MP Rahul Sinha on Tuesday defended the recently passed Anti-Goonda Bills in West Bengal, saying the legislation had become necessary to restore law and order in the state. While criticising the ruling Trinamool Congress, he alleged that criminal activities had increased under its administration, making life difficult for ordinary citizens.

Rahul Sinha claimed that the Trinamool Congress had allowed what he described as the dominance of anti-social elements across West Bengal. He alleged that criminals had become active in various parts of the state and that the deteriorating law and order situation had made it increasingly difficult for common people to live peacefully. According to him, these circumstances made the introduction of the Anti-Goonda legislation necessary.

Commenting on the controversy surrounding donations collected for the Ram Temple, the BJP leader said that the government was treating the allegations of financial irregularities with utmost seriousness. He stated that anyone found responsible for any wrongdoing in connection with the donation issue would face appropriate action in accordance with the law.

The remarks came shortly after the West Bengal Legislative Assembly passed two separate bills aimed at tackling organised criminal activities and strengthening preventive policing measures.

Under the provisions of the newly passed legislation, police authorities will be empowered to arrest individuals even before an incident takes place if there is credible information or apprehension of serious deterioration in law and order or the possibility of violent protests. The objective, according to the legislation, is to prevent crimes before they occur and maintain public safety.

Another bill passed by the Assembly provides for the confiscation of properties belonging to individuals identified as being involved in acts of violence or the destruction of public and private property. The legislation seeks to hold offenders financially accountable for damage caused during incidents of violence or unlawful activities.

The passage of the two bills has triggered political debate in West Bengal, with supporters arguing that they are necessary to strengthen law enforcement, while critics have raised concerns over the scope and implementation of the new legal provisions. The issue is expected to remain at the centre of political discussions in the state in the coming days.
