IIE DIGITAL DESK : The ABP India At 2047 Summit, Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir delivered a candid response to recent criticisms from former cricketers and commentators, emphasizing that Indian cricket belongs to the nation and not to any individual or group. Gambhir, known for his straightforward demeanor, asserted that his primary focus is on national pride rather than appeasing critics. "When I took up this job, I knew there would always be ups and downs. My job is to make the country proud, not please a few individuals sitting in air-conditioned commentary boxes," he stated.
Addressing the notion that some former players consider Indian cricket their personal domain, Gambhir remarked, "Some people sitting in the commentary box for 25 years think Indian cricket is their family fiefdom. It's not. It belongs to the people of India."
Gambhir also touched upon past criticisms regarding his prize money from the 2013 Champions Trophy, questioning the integrity of those who benefit from India yet choose to become NRIs for tax benefits. "They even questioned my prize money. These NRIs make money from India but become NRIs to save tax," he added.
Reiterating his dedication to building a fearless and accountable team, Gambhir declared, "I'm not a coach of any cozy club or lobby. I don't believe in playing politics. I'm here to build a team that plays fearlessly and with pride."
He concluded with a patriotic sentiment, urging commentators to recognize that cricket is not anyone's private property. "Commentators should realise – cricket kisi ki jaagir nahi hai (cricket is not anyone's private property). These people go abroad and become NRIs. I will stay in India and pay my taxes here."
Gambhir's remarks underscore his vision for Indian cricket—one rooted in nationalism, accountability, and an unwavering pursuit of excellence.
